Doug McNea, Freedom Fighter

Steven Greenhut: I should consider myself fortunate that I got to spend some time this weekend drinking beer and discussing politics with my old friend Doug McNea. We were all shocked to learn that Doug passed away Saturday night after collapsing at a GOP party at the Sheraton. I’ve known Doug since our battles with the San Jose Redevelopment Agency. Last year, I spoke at the Silicon Valley Taxpayers Association, which he led. He was a true freedom-fighter, a man who sided with the Little Guy and advocated his ideas with a gentle spirit that made him nice to be around. We had a good time at the Shenanigans Bar in Sacramento on Friday night, although we headed out after the slash metal music got too loud. We chatted about redevelopment Saturday afternoon at the Hyatt bar, then I headed home. Then I heard the sad news early the next morning. Rest in peace, my friend.
