Yes, Ronald Reagan, as Governor of California, agreed to raise the state sales tax - from 3 to 4 percent, about half what it is today. How many of California's Democrat state legislators would agree to a 4% sales tax today? I dare say none!

Percentages are just that - percentages - and they don't need to be adjusted for inflation.

Take a look at the PublicSafetyProject.org web site to see how government employee unions - especially firefighter and police unions - are effectively looting the public treasuries of the cities they are sworn to protect, and pushing cities and counties down the road towards bankruptcy. One fourth of City of El Segundo, California firefighters have total compensation exceding $250,000 per year. El Segundo police officers also have excessive and unsustainable compensation and pensions, but not quite as high as the firefighters.

See the <a href="http://www.publicsafetyproject.org/elsegundo/elsegundo_payroll.html" rel="nofollow">Public Safety Project El Segundo City Employee Payroll Page</a> at:

Love these comments.

I moved to CA in 1966 & remember him becoming Governor, but I was a student & not paying attention to politics. I never knew this about Reagan, but can't wait to point this out to both my Reagan idolizing friends & the ones who have no use for him.

Just imagine! Reagan actually talked to and worked with Democrats. OMG, he actually tried to maintain enough revenue to meet the needs of his state's citizens. He must have been a closet Socialist.
