A majority of all carry out grocery bags are made from clean burning natural gas not oil as most people think. These bags are 100% recyclable. By using plastic bags as opposed to paper bags we actually help the environment. How you ask? Paper bags require trees to be cut down for paper pulp to be manufactured, plastic bags do not. Trees are necessary in fighting air pollution. 1 bale of 500 grocery paper bags takes up the space of 6,000 HDPE grocery plastic bags and weigh 4 times as much as plastic bags. Plastic bags also help the environment by the reduced amount of fossil fuels needed to transport them to the stores

It is obvious why the grocery chains have come out in favor of this bill,
they stand to gain millions of dollars in extra profits by putting the cost of the bags on the consumer for a product they had always had to supply for free. They also stand to gain huge profits from the reduced amount of space
they need to store and transport the bags.

You are right. A plastic bag ban will hurt every Californian, including the people who work in the plastic industry.

Plastic bag bans are not a good idea (http://www.biodeg.org/position-papers/Plastic-bag-bans/?domain=biodeg.org. They are based on political science, not real science.

It cannot however be denied that plastic can lie or float around in the environment for decades, but the way to deal with this is to require all short-life plastic to be d2w Controlled-life Plastic, as the Government of the United Arab Emirates has now done. If that had been done in the USA years ago there would be no Pacific Garbage Patch.

d2w plastic costs little or no more than normal plastic; it degrades much more quickly than normal plastic, and it leaves no fragments of petro-polymer and no toxic residues. By contrast, “compostable plastic” is much too expensive for everyday use. It is designed for industrial composting – not home composting, and most of it will not readily degrade in the open environment.

The packaging manager of Tesco (Britain’s largest supermarket) said on 20th October 2009 that the supermarket “does not see the value in packaging that can only be industrially composted” and that “city authorities do not want it, as it can contaminate existing recycling schemes.”

Dear God! Yet another tax disguised as a savior to the environment. What will these politicians think of next?…….and I would certainly listen to some dippy actresses on how to save the environment that doesn’t even need saving. I’m surprised the little tarts didn’t claim that grocery bags are causing global warming.

This is an outstanding article. The Sacramento “liberal progressives” who are tied to “Hollywood” celebrities are not experts on working families, the elderly, or the poor. Creating a new Law to Ban plastic bags is nightmarish. This Law will hurt every Californian.
