Katy Grimes: With the Assembly budget deadline tomorrow, members of the California Legislative LGBT Caucus (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender) took nearly one hour during today’s floor session to honor members of the LGBT community, including having a musical performance by an openly gay musician. The acoustic guitar was beautiful, but the time for actual state business slipped away.
Last week Senators Christine Kehoe, D-San Diego, and Mark Leno, D-San Francisco presented SR 44 on the Senate floor during session, proclaiming June as LGBT Pride Month.
Being gay or straight is not the issue at hand but rather, with a state in dire financial crisis, the time spent on anything other than the budget crisis demonstrates a blatant disregard by California’s elected officials to stay focused on the important business. Most people would prefer the legislature to stop horsing around, deflecting and wasting precious time on social issues, and take the budget seriously.
June 15th is the constitutional deadline for the Legislature to pass a budget. The end of the fiscal year is June 30th.
Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez, D-Los Angeles, said last week that the deadline is probably going to pass without a budget.
