From Joe Gagnon: Well, it's worth thinking about. Most of the acdvcaoy for a carbon tax that I have seen proposes to use the revenues as a rebate to taxpayers to offset their increased energy costs. Using it in lieu of other taxes amounts to the same thing, but it might feel different. That might make it easier to sell. The biggest problem that I can see with the carbon tax would be its effect on our global competitiveness in the short run. If we internalize the environmental costs and the rest of the world does not, our costs of production will be higher. That can't be good for jobs. However, since there are many other countries besides our own facing fiscal crisis and recession, some real leadership might move us toward a new world order in which a carbon tax could be simultaneously adopted globally. A new trading block could be launched consisting of countries willing to commit to a carbon tax, with the unwilling excluded or subject to tariffs to create a level playing field.

It is not just athletes, but also business owners. I am a California based business owner. Every net job I have created over the past 5 years has been OUTSIDE of California. My California offices have a net reduction of about 40% during that same time. I apportion business income among the operating states, saving me taxes to hire elsewhere, not to mention fewer regulatory burdens. In a couple of years, I will sell my business for an 8-figure sum. I am currently shopping around for state residency for the year of that sale. It sure as heck will not be California, and when I go, I am taking my ongoing $20,000 monthly household budget with me. The last vote I will cast in California will be with my feet.

Or maybe, since Seiler was talking about personal income taxes, not corporate, he didn't feel the need to include every minute detail about California taxes. Granted, corporate taxes would play a role on the team-side and endorsement front of this article, but most readers don't come here to read a 45-page thesis. This article does a good job of presenting an example of a significant flaw in the California's tax, overspend, and tax again strategy.

Oh please someone call a waaaaaaaaambulance for Lebron never-even-won-a-championship James. And after that, someone call a fact checker for Mr. Seiler because evidently he either hasn't been paying very close attention or is just forgetting to include a few facts regarding taxes in California.

Our monosyllabic governor gave the green light to granting corporations a tax break worth $900M back in Feb. 2009 during dead of night without any hearings whatsoever. This was his idea of "solving" last year's budget crises. Those deals were approved in secret and remain set to take effect next year. This is on top of all those tax breaks business currently enjoys in the State. I won't even mention the fact that in the past 40 years, personal taxes are at an all time low. Anyone who doesn't think Lebron's accountants haven't already incorporated and are using those accounts to dodge/utilize tax loopholes is as intellectually dishonest as the writer of this article is.

The 800 lb elephant in the room that no state politician or Mr. Seiler care to notice is that California is broke because of sweetheart, secret tax breaks to corporations. Remove those tax breaks and watch the tax money roll in.
