Craig - you are 180 degrees wrong. I have often heard my uncle complain that the general misinterpretation about self esteem has caused an over reaction. I remember him saying many times, 'the first word in that phrase is "self."' What he was getting at is that the systems go overboard and instead of providing individuals to earn self esteem by giving them opportunitites to achieve, they coddle people. We've gone too far with political correctness because people have taken to reducing complex issues to sound bite solutions. This isn't about not being mean to people. It is about helping them succeed by lifting them up with opportunities for them to prove to themsleves that they can make the EFFORT and CONTRIBUTE. And they will then learn that lesson and grow through their own work.

What Vasco never understood was that self-esteem must be earned, not injected. If you do good in life, you feel good. If you do bad, you feel bad (unless you are a sociopath without a conscience). Liberals just can't seem to grasp it.
