Congratulations to California Watch!

Anthony Pignataro:

Today marks the one-year anniversary of California Watch[1], a non-profit journalism center (like us!) created publish kick-ass investigative reporting (like us!). “The mission here is to deliver rigorous, credible journalism that meets the highest possible standards and touches the lives of Californians,” Editorial Director Mark Katches wrote in this post [2]today.

To do this, Katches and senior editor Robert Salladay gathered a staff of 11 full time reporters. So far, Katches wrote, Berkeley-based California Watch has in the last year produced 34 stories and 933 blog posts — 967 pieces total. At a time when daily papers are cutting back investigative reports, this work is especially valuable.

But Katches’ numbers got me thinking: CalWatchdog, which has just two reporters, an editor and about five freelancers, has since our start in January produced 61 investigative stories, 192 breaking news stories, 473 blog posts and 101 columns — 827 stories in all.

Okay, enough navel-gazing. Congratulations California Watch, and please keep up the good work.
