Gov Hails One Vehicle Code

Traffic speeders have no fear — Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed SB 949[1] into law. This bill, authored by Senator Jenny Oropeza[2], D-Long Beach, bans cities from enforcing their own vehicle codes in an attempt to generate revenue (click here[3] to read my April story on SB 949).

“I’m grateful our governor recognized that Senate Bill 949 simply clarifies existing state law,” Oropeza said in a Sept. 30 press release. “This should now stop the growing practice where local governments made it their policy to substitute their own local ordinances for those in the state’s vehicle code.”

Now we like local control as much as the next guy (assuming the next guy is a Libertarian, good-government advocate), but in this case, we had to make an exception. A crazy quilt of vehicle codes and traffic laws is confusing to drivers, cops (and for heaven’s sake, those guys are confused enough as it is), elected officials (ditto) and insurance company actuaries (don’t even get us started…). Anyway, this bill clears all that up.
