Folsom Prison Museum Free!

Until Nov. 24, that is. But yeah: admission to the Folsom Prison Museum[1] is free (it’s normally $2 — no checks!). According to an official state Department of Corrections and Rehabiltation press release, this generosity is to celebrate “130 years of Public Safety, Notoriety and Community Participation.”

What, you didn’t know Folsom has a museum? Considering it’s the second oldest prison in the state, opened way back in 1880 and is best for that Johnny Cash concert[3] back in 1968, it should have a museum.
“Folsom State prison, its employees and inmates have provided services to the community and the CDCR for 130 years,” former prison warden Rick Hill said in the release. “It is appropriate the prison’s storied past, which is rich in history and tradition, be celebrated and shared with all.”
Did I mention the Folsom Prison Museum has one hell of a gift shop[4], stocked with plenty of old photos (many of Johnny Cash, naturally), books, official Folsom Prison shot glasses, coffee mugs and t-shirts? I know where I’ll be doing my Christmas shopping this year…
The museum is located at 312 3rd St. in the little “town” of Represa, and is open every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 916-985-2561 x4589 for more information.
