My husband and I made a decision to leave California because he was retiring and we felt we couldn't stay after living there for 35 plus years. We moved to Texas and live about 40 miles north of Houston. Our state legislature meets every other year for a limited amount of time. No state income tax. More businesses moving to Texas than any other state. We bought a larger home on 3/4 of acre for less than half of what we sold our Ca. home for. Great neighborhood and great neighbors which I met within a week of moving in. Men open doors for you and always address you as mam or sir. Some businesses are actually closed on Sundays. People are not afraid to say Merry Christmas or have a blessed day. I feel so free from the politically correct garbage of Ca. Two of my three daughters and their families have also moved here. One daughter is still in Ca. and we always try to convince them to move - it is a huge struggle for them in Ca. We hope one day they will see the light. My only fear is we will have a huge number of liberals or progressives or whatever the hell they call themselves now move into the state and ruin it.

As the head of a taxpayer group, I watch the daily push more taxes and fees, and wonder who they think can pay these hikes? As a second generation Californian, I am so sad. There will not be a third - our daughter has left the state never to return. Why? Better opportunities elsewhere.

Well done Katy. And thank you Jesus, i have been calling for a limit on Bill proposals for a long time. If they are limited to 2 bill proposals per year, you will have a sharp decrease in the amount of garbage & redundancy that comes from these people. There will be less of their "symbolic" legislation & light bulb laws and more attention to the issues that really matter to the people of California. Not to mention that the Legislators will stop acting as puppets for special interest groups who write their own bills, then have one of the pols they funded push it through the system.

At the very least, the Legislature should only be allowed to be in session for 60 days every year; maybe even every other year. Session could be called for emergencies. Many states have this sort of feature and it prevents runaway legislation. It also ensures that legislators have a real job in the real world, and hopefully understand the impact of legislation.

It is amazing that the Golden State has tarnished and rusted so badly. Long ago the state was pretty conservative, well run and prosperous.
I am pained to read this piece. I wish that what she says were not true. I wish that there was some reason to hope that voters in our state will awaken in time to reverse California's downward slide. I see my own children looking to other states for their futures. And I see evidence of our decline every where I look. This piece is your wake-up call, California.
