Steven Greenhut: Assembly Speaker John Perez, D-Los Angeles, apparently is too busy offering meaningless resolutions about teachers, etc., to bring SB77 — the plan to end redevelopment — back for a vote. There’s a good reason to do so now. The newly seated Assemblywoman Beth Gaines, R-Roseville, might favor ending redevelopment agencies given that she seems like a genuine grassroots conservative rather than a corporate-welfare type. She was supported by Howard Ahmanson, who has long championed the end of redevelopment. Her new chief of staff, Dave Titus, was the chief of staff for the state’s top foe of redevelopment, Assemblyman Chris Norby, R-Fullerton. Perez should call a vote soon. I can already hear the throngs of lobbyists and “I hate redevelopment, but we need to keep it” fellow Republicans heading down the hall to her office to convince her otherwise.
