If by “environmentalists” you mean the large local environmental groups that are too bureaucratic, too fearful and too co-opted to resist enormous environmental mistakes such as the Central Subway…you’re correct. But don’t forget that there are plenty of independent-minded Bay Area environmentalists who struggle constantly against such municipal and regional boondoggles.

Also there’s this:
The Central Subway project has very little to do with effective, efficient transportation.

In reality it’s all about the re-zoning of the surface land above the proposed project.
Since April the Planning Dept has been in the process of upzoning property for quarter of a mile on either side of Stockton Street; a half-mile swath.

*This* is how the political players will really come out of this smelling like roses. Suddenly all those properties will be worth many many times more than they are now. It will be possible to build very tall, bulky, dense, lot-line to lot-line buildings with no parking provided.

Although it’s late in the game, the the Central Subway Project can still be halted. Better to have wasted a couple million dollars than a couple *billion*!

The Press Conference that SaveMuni SF (savemuni.com) held on March 28 gave a complete examination of the finances and financing of the Central Subway project. Charts and graphs with exhaustive explanation of each showed exactly *how* unfeasible this boondoggle really is.

Financial expert Tom Rubin, CPA brought the data together. He can be interviewed on it should there be any interest.

It was not Newsom’s decision to create the Central Subway. The project started under Mayor Willie Brown, who made a promise to Chinatown power brokers to build it, despite it being a waste of money, because the old Embarcadero Freeway was demolished. The project has been pushed through by Brown, Pelosi and others to appease a perceived need in Chinatown that could easily be served with less expensive improvements along the old F Line on Stockton Street.

Did the California High Speed Rail Authority contract with a Chinese company to build their project? Hope not! How does a high speed train “jump” off its tracks?

BEIJING– China’s state media are reporting 11 people have been killed and 89 hurt after a bullet train lost power and was hit by another train.

Two of the carriages were knocked off a bridge in Saturday’s crash.

The official Xinhua New Agency said four cars on the second train also derailed but it did not say how serious that was.

The first train was traveling from the Zhejiang provincial capital of Hangzhou when the accident happened in Wenzhou city at about 8:30 p.m.
