This is bogus. A genuine scholar would propose to eliminate corporate taxes (about $9 billion in revenue) and impose a minimum of $50 per barrel tax on oil extraction (adjusted for inflation). The oil deep in the ground belongs to the state, not a greedy [expletive deleted] who is good at bribing government officials. California has already forgone trillions in revenues from the oil and gold stolen from its ground. Let us not allow this nonsense to happen any longer!

The cost of gas is not determined here in California if there was a severance tax. That is a lie the oil companies have perpetuated.

I hope this passes, but I’m sure the oil companies will put a lot of ads on television misdirecting people — like the tobacco companies already have with the proposition to tax cigarettes.

The medium is the message. These two awful entities will probably win.

Malcolm said we are “GOP cronies.” Actually, I’m registered “decline to state.” And you’ll notice that we frequently criticize the GOP, such as yesterday’s article, “CA GOP ‘Idiots’ Lose State Senate.”

Californians pay more for gas because our state’s environmental laws mandate a special mixture that isn’t available elsewhere, and we have higher gas taxes. But if Alaska is an example for us on a severance tax — and StevefromSacto also recommended that — then let’s also copy Alaska and completely eliminate our state income tax.

How can calwatchdog claim they are independent, they are GOP cronies. Alaska has one of the highest oil servence tax rates and they pay less per gallon then we do ( we are second to Hawaii.)

If this terrible new tax passes, gas prices will rise, over 10,000 jobs will be lost and our reliance on imported fuel will increase. Our gas taxes are already the highest in the nation according to the American Petroleum Institute, and traditionally these revenues have gone to transportation infrastructure. This proposal doesn’t even allocate a cent to roads. The Coalition of Energy Users has set up a website at http://www.NoOnTheGasTax.com to educate Californians on why this is such a bad idea.

Every oil producing state in the nation–including such liberal bastions as Texas and Alaska–has an oil severance tax, except for California. And tax money can be legally earmarked for specific uses; it’s been done for decades.

Even if the pension funds did not exist, do you think for a moment that the anti tax mafia would support more tax money going to education or social services? If you do, you also believe in the Easter Bunny.

The ultimate goal of the anti-tax zealots is the elimination of all income taxes and most public services. Anyone who believes otherwise is the one who is being misled.
