I know with all the social programs and foodbanks available in the USA the ONLY reason any children don't know where there next meal is coming from is because their incompetent (sometimes drug addicted) parents don't bother to provide meals to them and may sell the food stamps in exchange for drugs or whatever. Giving more is not really going to help. We have to find better ways to make sure the CHILDREN get food. And even so the stories about all the starving children are false. Unfortunately we see a story of it now and then and it always turns out the parents are abusive and neglected the needs of the child or starved him or her on purpose as some sort of punishment. There is no way we should be foolish enough to believe that 5% of our children are going hungry AND that giving more to their incompetent loser parents is the answer to it.

I seriously have a hard time believing anyone inside the borders of the United States is starving against their will.

North Koreans in the mid 1990's, now that's starvation. When the rib cage is visible but the stomach is swollen, that's starvation. Ethiopia in 1985, that's starvation.

America today? I'm sorry I just don't believe it exists. Food here is too full of energy (whether that energy is of any quality is another debate) for people eating it to be thin unless they are self-regulating.

I remember reading an article a few years ago from a UCLA student who said there was something seriously wrong when our homeless population was obese.

Here's my 2 cents worth. The Hunger Campaign is a scam! With Food Stamps people can buy eggs, whole grain bread, large packages of cheese, beans and lentils and rice in bulk, milk, peanut butter, large bags of frozen chicken(not processed), ground turkey and beef, large packages of frozen vegetables. This is HEALTHY food. Instead, many choose to spend their food stamp allotment on chips, soda, processed food and other junk food items. Children who come from families at the poverty level can get a free lunch and often a free breakfast. So what the heck is the BIG deal here? I know because I am a single mother and I can feed my daughter and me healthy food with a $250 food stamp allowance. Trust me, we're not hungry and my daughter doesn't even get a free lunch because her school doesn't offer it. I wouldn't want her to eat the crap they serve anyway. It's all processed. I am a part-time teacher and I only make $21,000 per year. I can pay my bills with my salary (I don't buy expensive "toys" and clothes) and with the help of food stamps I can feed my small family. I adopted my daughter from India 6 years ago. I had a business and my financial situation changed from me making $50,000 to less than half almost overnight. I went back to school and got my teacher certification and immediately found work as a teacher upon graduation. BTW, the US government paid for my education with the PELL grant. If families are having a hard time, they are not using the money that the government gives them properly. They don't know HOW to shop for healthy food and they keep having more and more kids that they can't feed. STOP THIS STUPIDITY and INSANITY. We need to educate people so that they don't get into the poverty bind in the first place and if they do, like what happened to me, then they need to learn to be taught how to budget to make their dollars stretch. It's that SIMPLE. There is absolutely no need for hunger in this country. The hunger comes because people are not eating the proper foods. A bowl of rice and lentils will fill you up (and not out) a lot longer than a bag of chips and soda. A peanut butter sandwich is far better to eat than a school cafeteria bowl of nachos with plastic cheese on it. Make healthy choices for your family and stop the whining about how much America is hungry. I'm tired of hearing it.

Two things conservatives can't stand: poor people getting away with screwing the government, and rich people not getting away with screwing the government.

It's shameful, and well documented if not painfully obvious, the gaping inequality in this country being one of the highest of rich nations. The stagnation of wages, rising costs of living, and apparently, the levels of food insecurity.
http://www.worldhunger.org/articles/Learn/us_hunger_facts.htm
http://feedingamerica.org/hunger-in-america/hunger-facts/hunger-and-poverty-statistics.aspx

Parents do give up their own food for their children. Not everyone is eager to go for assistance... And they should travel to their police departments?
There are "poverty classes" people attend to understand the range of difficulties - they've found it pretty eye-opening.

If by "bureaucrats" is meant social workers, they're not keeping those important and stimulative jobs. In communities across the country, they're being axed along with critical programs. Food banks are asking for help, charities are under load many just packing up.
TANF was an injustice, which basically throws people out if they can't achieve an arbitrary level of economic stability, regardless of what difficulties they face - like (ding ding) no jobs or health. All the while permitting states to plug their budget gaps with the federal funds meant to aid the most vulnerable. And live how they must - almost no one gets general assistance. A knowledgeable official on EBT doesn't believe abuse is widespread - but one could actually look at EBT fraud data.

Now the new radicals turn logic on its head with the brilliant notion that helping people is hurting them - talk about blame the victim. It's shooting fish in a barrel, stoking up the "Angry White Male" to mock (while ignorant of) the legitimate struggles of millions of hard working honest people, sweeping them under the rug to bleat about a few. In any case, it pales next to the damage done over the past few years who WORK - to favor those who just OWN.

Riots and guillotines are great motivators too. ;)

"Poverty numbers are inflated. Politicians simply say you are poor if you make, say, 20k compared to 15k a few years ago, with no real evidence to support the increase. It is simply an exercise in job protection for beaurocrats"

I think your comment has merit, Hondo. I believe that they have lowered the bar on what qualifies for 'poverty'. Just because a person has a low income it does not mean he lives in poverty. Much more must be taken into account. Net worth should be he primary indicator of a poverty label. Someone could have $500,000 in net worth - yet have a low income due to lack of investment return or a lost job, etc....

If you watch the fine video done by that black woman above that Ian linked you can understand the mockery that she makes of our system. She openly mocks it. We know it's a total scam and probably more than half of those collecting food stamps should not be entitled to them.

The bureaucrats want to keep their jobs. Look at crime. It has been said to drop significantly in the last 5-10 years. But since we don't have as much crime do you see cops being layed off??? Of course not. Most departments are hiring. So none of it makes any sense. Well informed and educated people should be able to connect the dots. Most are WILLFULLY IGNORANT!

"To starve in this country you have to phisically run away from food. Go to any police station in this country and they will give you a list of page after page of palaces to get free food"

Of course. Hungry stomachs are not necessarily a bad thing. Hunger is a great motivator. It forces people to work for their food. Nothing at all wrong or shameful about that!

Homeless numbers are inflated too. Did you know if you graduate from collage and move home for a short time before finding a new place, you are considered 'homeless'. So when Chelsea Clinton graduated from collage and moved back into the White House for a short time she was considered 'homeless'.

Mr. Donkey - I noticed that Mike did not return and answer my question. It's a rare occasion when new posters return to explain their positions once questioned. It's unfortunate. I only wanted clarity. And it only makes me suspicious whether there was any substance behind what Mike claimed to be true.

In America there is free food everywhere - whether it's in the schools, the food banks, through the food stamp program (46 million and growing)or in homeless shelters. LOTS AND LOTS of free food. There is really NO GOOD REASON for anyone to go hungry in America. At least not now. My parents used to tell me about the days of the Great Depression when there was LEGITIMATE hunger in America. I remember when my dad told me that bread and gravy was a delicacy to his family. That was back in the day when friends helped friends and neighbors helped neighbors and charitable organizations helped the needy. Today the government wants to make everyone dependent on IT - by transferring the wealth of the struggling middle class to the pension hogs and all the leeches we have in society. My dad always said that hunger is a great motivator. It moves people off their butts to be productive and self-sustaining. America has lost that virtue, Mr. Donkey. In 2012 everyone is looking for one handout or another. The fact that over 50% of Americans receive some sort of government transfer payment is very telling - and indicates the decline of an empire.

I speak only the truth.

Mike, and how could that happen in America. I have a Grandson who is hungry 24/7. Ten minutes after eating he is still hungry. Just because a kid is whining about being hungry doesn't make it so. Sometimes the lust for more is not based in reality. Look at the obscene pay and pensions of the RAGWUS leeches. They are underworked and over compensated at every level, yet never stop asking for MORE!!! ;)

"I work with disadvantaged children and I see hungry ones on a regular basis. I do not keep track of the numbers but hunger is American children is a reality"

Mike, if they're hungry the only reason could that is that they don't show up for the free food. All of us know that the schools offer free breakfast and lunch. According to an earlier blog at CWD some even serve dinner for their afterschool crowd. 46 million are on EBT food stamps. So if you see hungry ones it must be because they are on diets. That's my only guess. But it's NOT due to lack of food or money to pay for it.

Please educate me, Mike. What are you talking about???
