I don’t think Algebra in 8th grade should be an all or nothing goal. When a state tries to set a math goal for thousands of students they don’t know, they’ll never get it right. Some kids can do Algebra in 7th grade and some will struggle with it even in 10th grade. Right now if kids aren’t doing Algebra in 8th grade they are considered remedial – that is silly. Math, of all the subjects, is the most relative to the student. All the rest of the subjects are more easily standardized but if we want all students to accomplish math it has to be flexible without making the students feel remedial before they’ve even entered High School!

The Core Curriculum is not The Basics. The Core Curriculum is learning how to share as a community (not an individual) and to view life through the lens of race and gender.

IOW it’s the way they teach in college. Left wing.

Hondo- 80%-90% of ALL the jobs out there are minimum wage jobs. There are simply no middle class jobs left. They are all in china, korea or japan

I know engineers who cant get a job….law grads working at Starbucks……even MD’s making less than $100K at Kaiser…….

This si th emost innovative coiuntry in th eworld, it is our culture, in our blood, we should be producing millions of mid level, high level paid jobs, mllions.

I kinda actually agree with Uhaul here. Dump the fluff and sports and focus on the 3 r’s.

It’s beyond belief that K thru 12 education should only amount to a minimum wage job. For Gods sake, if you look behind the counter at any Starbucks you see a slew of collage grads or on their way to one. You just need enough Starbucks english to desypher those insane coffee drink requests. I’ll have a skinny venti latte half decaf, milk temp. at 166 degrees ect. ect……… For gods sake it takes them women 5 minutes to explain their drink request.
Me. I’ll just have a cupa joe to go.

In 1960 I took Algebra I in 7th grade. Our Jr. High School had 3 classes of 7th graders taking Algebra I. My daughter (H.S.valedictorian) had to wait until 8th grade. Now the brightest have to wait until 9th? Our legislators in Sacto apparently never did take a math class. Oh wait, look at our state budgets.

And what will happen to those who (like me) struggled with math? If you don’t have the basics down, algebra will be difficult.

Not every student has someone at home who can help them.

Since the majority of the public figures in Sacramento havent even taken Algebra or know what it is……..they are afraid, very afraid. If someone comes a long who runs against them, who has, they just might win the election and be able to balance the budget.
