Katy Grimes: The ballot initiative results[1] makes it appear that it appears that California residents love paying taxes,

According to the California Secretary of State’s website[2], Proposition 30, Gov. Jerry Brown’s tax increase measure, passed 53.9 percent to 46.1 percent. This makes California the highest taxed state in the country.

Proposition 39, the tax increase on out-of-state businesses, also passed, 60.1 percent to 39.9 percent. Watch for many of these out-of-state companies to wrap up California operations, rather than pay another $1 billion in taxes to the state of California.

Proposition 32, which would have ended the automatic payroll deduction from union employee’s paychecks, failed to pass, 43.8 percent to 56.2 percent. Unions spent more than $73 million to kill this measure.

Proposition 31 failed. This was the 2-year budget reform measure by California Forward.

But remember when the government raises taxes, revenues fall.

Around the Capitol[3] has all of the results with lots of bar graphs and colors.

There are many people throughout the state today who are really baffled. California voters in the last eight elections refused to pass tax increases. Californians have not voted to pass a statewide tax increase since 2004.

But many have warned that when people can vote for their own entitlements, it’s all over. Perhaps California has really reached this place.

National results status quo

The 2012 Election overall had status quo results. The U.S. Senate is still controlled by the Democrats. In California, as expected, Sen. Diane Feinstein kept her seat.

The U.S. House of Representatives is still controlled by the Republicans, and the Presidency went back to President Barack Obama.

There are those who believe that the Presidential election turned last summer when the Obama campaign put out a barrage of negative campaign ads against Mitt Romney, and Romney didn’t fight back. Others say that Romney’s singular focus on the economy didn’t appeal to too many voters.
