Agree totally. Part of a new GOP has to be that we play chess, not checkers. The Dems never miss a chance to help us self-destruct so we should return the favor.
"I predict a major loss for Teddy Lieu’s pension tax"

Rex, you are either a hopeless optimist or a glutton for punishment. The well known flakiness and ignorance of Crazyfornia voters makes these things hard to predict. Voters in this state are highly erratic and tend toward the irrational.

As an indication of how far things have deteriorated here, wasn't it just a decade ago that Governor Gumby got booted out office in part for jacking up the car registration tax? Now his superannuated former boss is running the state and his party has been given a mandate to do as it pleases. Maybe this is because the demographic tipping point has been reached and what used to outrage a majority of taxpayers is now deemed acceptable by a new majority of tax takers. This seems also to be the case at the Federal level to a lesser extent.

The new paradigm bodes ill for the minority who are net taxpayers. Maybe it's time for all of us to get on the gravy train and see what's behind door #3. What does the lovely Carol Merrill have for us today? If we dress up funny and make a fool of ourselves maybe Governor Monty Hall will give us a free Frigidaire or an Amana Radar Range. If we really hit the jackpot we could win an all expense paid trip on the Not So High Speed Train to Nowhere and end up in MortgageBailoutWorld, FreeCollegeEducationWorld or FreeHealthcareWorld!

Get on the dole folks and get what you can while you can before we get reabsorbed by Mexico and have to start paying a gringo invader tax too.

Some thoughts...
First, Sacramento pols and the unions do this every year. Why do you think teacher's contracts have a clause that calls for layoff notices in March?
Second, the CTA and other unions will pour $25 to $40 million into this as well. I can see the ads now, "Vote for the car tax or your streets will crumble and you won't be able to drive to work." And then there's the second ad, "It's only the rich that will really pay. Don't you think they should pay just a little more to keep their Rolls and Bentley's."
Third, the only answer is to really begin governing from the ballot box. We started with Prop 13, now it's time to do the same thing and limit Sacramento's take. Say we eliminate the sales and property taxes and institute a 6% flat rate income tax.

After last week's results, I have no hope that California voters will reject this tax. In addition to 30 and 39, idiot voters approved countless tax/fee increases at the local level. Look for accelerated departures of productive taxpayers.
