In 1960, the biggest employer in Amerika was General Motors and most of those jobs were full time and for life. Now, Walmart is amerikas biggest employers and almost all of their jobs are part time and almost noone retires from that company.

And tnhye paid EXCELLENT WAGES, and benefits. Today it s Walmart that has a POLICY against OVERTIME. NO ONE at Walmart gets OT, company plicy.

Compare that to the OC Fire Authority where the top FF made $150K in overtime alone in 2010.

I actually agree with some of my liberal friends here. Walmart has shut down small town america. They buy almost nothing for their store shelves but Chinese slave made stuff. A double whammy. They shut down any American made manufacturing plants and shut so many mom and pop main street businesses across this country. Yes, I am a conservative capitolist, but the Walton family alone, has more wealth than a 100 million americans combined. A fortune made off the backs of Chinese slave labor.
The same with Apple. All of their stuff is ( there is talk of opening manufacturing plant in america, but not in CALIFORNIA) made in China. Steve Jobs, by his own words, was one of the most insane egomaniacs in the corperate world. Greedy, vindictive, a screaming monster of a boss. How many of you fine liberals here own a Mac, or an I phone or pod, or pad?
You don’t notice it so much in Kali, but if you drive through the older midwest towns, you see boarded up ghost towns. Instead of local shopping, people have to drive thru several other empty towns to a big walmart box store to buy shoes. There are no cobblers ( that’s a shoe repairmen for any of you younger than 40yo) any more in amerika. They used to be common in this country. Walmart shut them down. It is cheaper to buy a new cheap pair down at Walmart.

If most everything they sold was made in america, I wouldn’t have a problem. In 1960, every part in a Chevy was made in america( I’m pretty sure?).
The republicans have to look at these issues if they want to get back in power.

Salon had this article “Hipsters on Food Stamps” and I realized that “20- and 30-something creatives and young professionals” continue to be very clever in using the System to fund their rebellion against The Man.

It refers to a “30-year-old art school graduate” and her friend (“with benefits?”) from Westchester, who “graduated from the University of Chicago and toiled in publishing in New York during his 20s before moving to Baltimore last year with a meager part-time blogging job.” He claims “about half of his friends in Baltimore have been getting food stamps…”

Perhaps some 20- and 30-something creatives and young professionals will see this post and apply for government food assistance. It will allow you to save enough money from your food budget for a good collection of wine from Trader Joe’s. See you at Burning Man in 2013!

Do words even have meanings anymore? Or, if there is something you don’t like, can you just call it a ‘ponzi’ scheme’ or ‘unsustainable’ or ‘socialist’, and use the words interchangeably?

And when you say “One-third of all welfare recipients are in California.”, you are being misleading unless you qualify that you are referring to ONE program (TANF) which accounts for less than $2 billion out of the state and local welfare budget of over $50 billion. (With federal matching, TANF is around $3 billion and total welfare budget is over $80 billion)

Of the TOTAL state and local welfare costs, California has about 12% of the nation’s population AND about 12% of the nation’s welfare COSTS, according to the US Census Bureau.

The abusive Walmart policies have increased employee reliance on government assistance and the need for a government funded social safety net. In fact, Walmart has become the number one driver behind the growing use of food stamps in the United States with “as many as 80 percent of workers in Wal-Mart stores using food stamps.” What is even more shameful is that their CEO makes more money in one hour, than his employees earn in an entire year.
