I like #1 comment. I think the difference between Montana and here is the high level of poverty on the streets, systemic economic disparity (between races and gap between income and cost of living is huge) and historical lack of access to "legitimate" means to having enough. OPD and the Mayors office are histically a mess; the mayors proposed budget is 200M policing and 50M community services; she would rather lock people up for profit (correction/policing are largest lobby group in CA) or powerlessness (union contracts, developer profit motives...); she knows the budget perpetuates violence and more incarceration, but is powerless, inpart to her own incompetency and, in part, the weight of a historic system not open to change. She rests on profiting developers to clean up the streets and is a barrier to Oakland citizen efforts to create a place for everyone to live safely. Here, people think restricting guns to citizens will stop violence by citizens; though, only assuring less economic disparity and access to right livlihood will be the only means to address violence. I'd say the rate of police violence with guns is disproportionate to citizens violence with guns. Yes, I'm a well off "white" liberal male.

A writer in the Oakland Tribune just called for the national guard for the city. This city can't blame any republicans for it's misery. Same for Chicago. They can blame the democratic party machine. I imagine if you look at the murder rates in the counties that voted republican vs those who voted democrat in this last election, you would see an ongoing genocide of their own people by the dems. Someone prove me wrong. I don't know where to get those stats.

You used an anecdote, did you not, jimmy? You think you know more about the states of WY and MT, than I do, just because you worked in Yellowstone? I'm sure you had the time during your day off each week to drive all over those two states and observe who had guns on their trucks! Grandmas!! Oh, Boy!

jimmy, you cannot compare apples and oranges when it comes to gun ownership in respective states. The population of the whole state of WY would fit into the city of San Bernardino, with half of that City still available for half of Rhode Island.

Seesaw.....you should have learned at some point, by your advanced age, that "arguing by anecdote" is a logical fallacy, as well as every demagogue's best friend. I won't say your are guilty of the latter. You certainly are of the former.

Leave your poor grandmother out of this! LOL...... The fact is that Wyoming and Montana have exceptionally high gun ownership rates.......second and third behind Alaska, I believe.

I was raised in WY, jimmy. My grandmother was widowed three weeks before my mother was born and she had to raise four girls alone on a farm. She would have made a good subject for a TV series. She eventually sold the farm after the girls were grown and moved to town where she rented out a couple apartments in her home. She died at the age of 95--I never saw her with a gun of any kind.

I spent a summer in college working for the park concessionaire in Yellowstone (waiter, bartender, cashier - that sort of thing). My priorities, as you can imagine, were girls and beer, with some hiking and camping thrown in. But I did happen to notice - and not that it bothered me - that EVERYONE in Montana and Wyoming seemed to have a gun. Junior high school kids had hunting rifles. Grandmothers had guns. And everyone kept a gun of some sort in their pick-up truck.

Yet the murder rate in those states is less than half the national average. And robberies - get this - are ONE FIFTH the national average.
