Seesaw, I would guess that those pushing shopping carts are pushing shopping carts because they were reckless and made a series of bad decisions. People who make one bad decision typically don't end up pushing shopping carts--it's those who make many bad decisions that you see on the streets. It takes a lot to end up on the streets and that's often where they prefer to be. But if you have feelings of altruism, feel free to invite them into your home.

Jerry had a good point. It should be looked at more closely. Two hundred years ago, eighty some percent of jobs were in agriculture. Now it's less than two percent.

We don't say "we need more agriculture jobs", why do we say we need more "good paying" manufacturing jobs?

Fifty years ago, most wives did not work outside the home. Now, if they lose a job, they are part of the 'unemployment' problem.

Perhaps we should consider "paying" more people to stay out of the job market, much like we pay farmers NOT to produce, in order to bolster crop prices.

Trying to force people into the labor market when they are really not needed for production, transportation, or services leads to a needless waste of resources and drives down the wages for everyone else in the market.

To better understand Jerry Brown's view of the world, I recommend reading his own words. Here are a few memorable quotes from Jerry Brown's radio program called "We the People" from 1995. The entire transcript is available here. It provides a glimpse of his world view and others in the California Democratic Party, many of whom would be more appropriately called Democratic Socialists, as in the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
http://www.omsys.com/jeremy/welfare.htm

I quote:

"We need more welfare and fewer jobs. Jobs for every American is doomed to failure because of modern automation and production. We ought to recognize it and create an income-maintenance system so every single American has the dignity and the wherewithal for shelter, basic food, and medical care. I'm talking about welfare for all. Without it, you're going to have warfare for all. Without a universal health care like every other civilized country, without a minimum level of income, this country will explode."

... or ...

"Automation and technology would be a great boon if it were creative, if there were more leisure, more opportunity to engage in raising a family, providing guidance to the young, all the stuff we say we need. America will work if we're all in it together. It'll work when there's a shared sense of destiny. It can be done! It's all there! What isn't there is the leadership to create the kind of social network, the safety net, the distribution that would truly create a just and equal society. If it were, you wouldn't have the homeless sleeping in the park across from the White House in a neighborhood with one of the highest incarceration and crime rates in the world."

... or ...

"First, expose relentlessly the big lie that comes over the tube every night, that if you just go out and find that job, and work harder, it'll all be fine. It won't! ... There's not enough work to go around and a lot of the pay is not fair."

Remember, he wrote this in 1995, before the PC/telecom/Internet revolution and before the Clinton economic expansion that Democrats constantly crow about. Strangely, California under decades of Democratic Party rule is probably farther away from Jerry Brown's vision of American than many other states.

Rex the Wonder Dog! and Douglas are right that Mickelson will likely pay less than the 13.3% marginal tax rate. However, based on actual Franchise Board Tax (FTB) data, Mickelson will likely pay a SIGNIFICANTLY higher tax rate and SIGNIFICANTLY more taxes than the vast majority of Californians. This chart uses 2008 data when the top rate was 10.3% instead of 13.3%.

CHART: Averaged Effective Tax Rate for California Personal Income Tax (2008)

So, let's ask the question. Who is paying their "fair share" of federal and California taxes? Who is contributing their "fair share" to the "where we are going as a society." Some people don't have money but do have ample time. Then, there are those in California society that contribute neither time nor money but merely consume both from fellow citizens. Some are truly disabled and incapable and we should help these people. Others are able-bodied but feel comfortable living off the efforts of others.

13.3 is the marginal rate. The effective rate is much lower. Lower still after federal write-offs.

Even so, with his income he will probably save millions in state income tax.

Question: if he continues to golf, does he not pay California tax on any income or winnings earned in California?

I don't follow golf and never heard of Phil Mickelson till this week. Whatever he decides to do, I wish him the best.

Douglas says:
” The four-time major champion said higher state and federal taxes will take 60 percent of his income.”
Don’t believe it.

I hate it agree with Doug (it kills me!) but he is correct, if Lefty is paying 60%+ in taxes, with all of his write-offs, he is an idiot, or his tax advisor is.

Now having said that, whatever he IS paying in CA is 13.3% HIGHER than in NV, AZ TX and other states with no income tax.
