Forget Texas; look to China

Texas Gov. Rick Perry descends on California today[1]. He’s hoping to lure our businesses away from high taxes and regulations in the Golden State to the relatively lower taxes and regulations in the Lone Star State. But the future remains not California or Texas, but China.

China just surpassed[2] the receding United States as the world’s greatest trading nation, a title held by the USA for about 130 years. Before that, the United Kingdom held the title for 100 years, after the Industrial Revolution started there.

In Huntington Beach, where I live, it took 40 years to turn swampland into a handful of homes for rich people. I know the family that owned the land and tried to turn it into middle-class homes. Environmental and other regulations, especially the bureaucratic California Coastal Commission, prevented that, insisting on large recreation spaces between the homes. Which meant the only way to make money on the development was to put up McMansions.

40 years.

Now, compare that to the following video, which shows a 30-story building going up in China — in just 15 days.
