Doug: You’re high. AMTRAK’s Texas Eagle and Sunset Limited both currently make stops at Tucson. Construction of Southern Pacific’s “Sunset Route” between LA and Texas was the impetus behind the Gadsden Purchase, in fact. The line – the primary route between the West Coast and Texas – is very much active.

Seiler, meanwhile, is guilty of conflating freight train wrecks and derailments with passenger train wrecks.

All that said, there is only one part of the US where a case can – and in fact should – be made for high speed rail: Boston – Washington Corridor. It’s obvious to anyone with half a brain: Euro- and Japanese-style HSR only pencils where population densities approach European and Japanese levels.

Anything beyond BOS-WASH is delusional and colossally wasteful.

wow,
those are the same routes the Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, Union Pacific built back in the 1800’s. amazing.
Amtrak took over passenger service on those routes and then they shut most of them down. no customers.
the route in southern AZ is mountains and closed in the 1960’s. it was also the grand plan of a transcontinental line.

airlines killed the passenger service. plain and simple.
