And the trappings of power. Ever notice how politicians pay increases proportionately with every tax increase? They throw a little loose change at government employees to satisfy them and buy their allegiance. The rest of that new tax revenue magically disappears into the maw of “general revenues” with maybe 2 cent on the dollar going towards the original justification for the tax increase.

The politicians publicly plays 2-card monte with tax revenue while palming a sizable chunk of that money to line their own pockets and the pockets of their cronies (e.g., consultants for the high-speed rail, Hollywood, etc.).
