In 1996, two years before Chavez became President, the inflation rate in Venezuela was over 99% for the year. At varying times since the 1970's, the poverty rate in Venezuela was nearly 70%, falling to approximately 35% within two years of Chavez taking office.

Venezuela is just another petroleum based economy, which means its economic health has always risen and declined with the price of oil. It was also a founding member of OPEC, long before Chavez was anywhere on its national scene.

Most of the right was particularly annoyed with Chavez because the U.S. is one of the largest buyers of Venezuelan oil, which meant we provided something on the order of $400 billion of income to the state owned oil company there each year. It was the state owned part of the Venezuelan oil business that the petro-politicians here hated most, because that meant they couldn't get their hands on any of the vast oil resources there.

Fear of Chavez? Certainly not for any military reason, but his ability to influence OPEC and the price of oil was always something feared and resented by the oil companies and their bought politicians like Bush, Cheney, et al.

The truth on Hugo. When he took over a dozen years ago, Venezuela had a good economy, a strong middle class and it was a safe place to live and visit. I knew a man who came here from there about the time Hugo took over.
Now, the economy is in shambles, Hugo devalues the money there every other week. And the country is a horrifically violent place, a slaughterhouse of murder and violence.
Hugo looted the country. He is a billionaire socialist. He had no real money when he was elected el presidente, nothing like the billions he has now. Of the trillion dollars in oil revenue his country has received over the years, hundreds of billions are missing.
Fear him? Scream on. Instead of spending the oil revenue on guns, he and all his cronies stole it. A squad of boy scouts with BB guns could hold off that banana republic army.

Dyspeptic says:
THIS JUST IN … HUGO CHAVEZ IS DEAD!
I hope Sean Penn has a nervous breakdown over his hero’s death. No, not Obama, Chavez.
----------------------------------------
So what do you care for dys? Chavez sold the bulk of Venezuela's oil to the United States! I'm sure it was still not enough for the Republican pig war machine! If they were in office they would have just invaded the country for the oil all while killing children and their families along the way, your tax dollars at work." El Comandante" Didn't want The US influence in his region,So what! And,Chavez used his country's vast oil wealth to launch social programs that include state-run food markets, new public housing, free health clinics and education programs. Poverty declined during Chavez's presidency in their country. All the republican pigs do is steal oil to pad their fat wallets and screw the working people!!!!! Again, what did Chavez do to you? Or what did Sean penn do to you?????
