Although the state of California provides links to resources on financial literacy on it's website, the fact remains there are no standards on Financial Literacy in the state, this makes California one of four states in the nation with out any standards for teaching Financial Literacy or Personal Finance.
The Council for Economic Education, where I work, produces a bi-annual Survey of the States tracking which states have standards and course requirements in Economics and Personal Finance. An interactive version of this survey can be found at www.surveyofthestates.com.

In reviewing AB166, I notice that several surveys and reports from 2011 are used in addition to the Jump$tart 2008 survey.

This bill will certainly benefit the students of California and it is short sited to state this bill is not needed. As one of four states in the country without standards for Financial Literacy, Californians should be up in arms that they are lagging behind the rest of the nation in this critical area.

Financial Literacy education provides more than just the skills to write a check and make a budget, it provides critical decision making skills that students need in every aspect of their life.

Forget the students for a moment.......

An even better place to start would be to require CA legislators to watch "Free To Choose", as most in the majority have bona fides in community organizing, activism, social and environmental justice, etc., but are themselves financial illiterates.
