Yikes. As a Yelper myself I think that is just a stupid and superficial gimmick. For one thing Yelp can be gamed/manipulated and as John points out it provides (usually) consumer reviews of COMPETITIVE profit driven businesses.

Imagine if Governor Newsome set up a Yelp! style rating system for government agencies. It would have no teeth at all. Nothing would change about these agencies no matter how abysmal the reviews were.

We are not customers of The State. We are subjects. Big difference.
