I left California for central Oregon 2 years ago. BEST move I ever made, but I still had to file a Kalifornia tax return last year. I do my own taxes on TurboTax and always mail in a paper return. My California tax return is Longer, page wise, than my federal return and I have to attach a complete copy of my federal return.....My Oregon return is 2 pages!!oh, and the state of Oregon does not demand a copy of my federal return....oh, and there's NO sales tax!!! I curse what California has become, it is NOT worth the sight of a freakin' palm tree or a 65 degree day in January. As for the business climate, for me at least it is like stepping back in time to a place where my receivables are paid ON TIME, people are pleasant and friendly, and there's more than enough work to keep me and my employees very busy. Oh, and my utilities are 1/3 of what they were in Kali.....

Dear Mehlman...

Rest assured that I am leaving this Kalifornsky fecal pit. Its over for this fool's gold state. It will collapse and I am looking forward to LMAO while living in another state. I hope you will feel so much better to dispose of those of us who pay the tax bill. I know I will.

Oh and just think... you may soon be deemed to be quite wealthy someday soon when the democraps in Sacramentzky realize that they have to lower that income threshold in order to make budget.

good luck my friend.

Steve: Mississippi is a bad example from your point of view. Its state income tax rate is 5% above $10,000. For the middle class, its tax rates work out to about the same as California. Mississippi also has a 7 percent sales tax, and applies it even to food, which California exempts.

Its tax climate is almost as bad as California's, but without the countervailing great weather outside. California is "Mississippi on the Pacific."

A better choice: Texas. Zero state income tax, cheap land, abundant jobs, roads that are not crumbling and clogged. Sales taxes are about 8.14 percent, close to the 8 percent I pay in Orange County. In TX as in CA, food is exempt from sales.

I'd move, but I write about California so I have to live here. Sort of like writing about North Korea; the job means you have to live in Pyongyang.

Lastly, Steve-o:

I hereby decree that you are banned from any reference to the state of Mississippi from this day forward. I bet fully a third of your contra arguments on this board invoke the Magnolia State, and

"Thanks for your rose colored glasses, but all your doing is repeating facts that are 2 years old and not relating them to trends, which are far more important."

Excellent point Loufca.......

Steve-o, innocent of basic economic principles as he is, fails to recognize one of the most immutable Laws of Economics, paraphrased thusly- "What matters is at the margin".

No doubt California will continue to capture a high pct. of venture capital, retain a large ag sector, etc. for the rest of my lifetime (hopefully several decades hence). But there is no denying that California's capture, its share, of such goodies is on the wane. The trend is downward. In a word: the shnide.

One would have to have infinite ignorance not to at least understand that.

Steve, what you forget are some of the other facts:

1. California has the 2nd highest tax rate in the country.
2. There is a net loss of business leaving/coming to California
3. Look at where most of the venture capital went in 2011 - high tech, basically nor Cal
4. I suggest you go to Dallas (I was there 2 weeks ago) and compare the number of new buildings going up versus LA, San Jose or SF, combined
5. Look at the states GDP - one of the lowest in the 50 states.

Thanks for your rose colored glasses, but all your doing is repeating facts that are 2 years old and not relating them to trends, which are far more important.

One example, there are 53 Fortune 500 companies in California. In 2010 there were 57. Hmmm that's almost a 10% drop. I wonder why?

Dyspeptic, instead of wasting your time trying to "repatriate" your state when it is clear that the vast majority of Californians don't subscribe to your ideology, whey don't you just move to a state where your political views will find more acceptance.
