I’m sure some of this is getting traction because it was reported that the nutcase in Santa Monica had modified his AR-15.

Then again, it probably also shows the sheer ignorance of anti-gun zealots, who are truly shocked to find out that firearms are often modified, fiddled with, monkeyed with and generally jacked-around with……and have been since the first Chinese “fire lance” in the 13th Century.

The way to handle these attempts to bypass our laws would be to use the same language as the National Firearms Act or 1934 to describe the prohibited firearms. Under that statute, any part that makes a weapon into a prohibited class of firearms is, itself, considered a regulated firearm for legal purposes.

In California, that would only require changing the current law to include any parts that can be used to convert a legal magazine into an illegal magazine, statutorily defining those parts as contraband.

There’s nearly 80 years of precedent in federal law, so the constitutional issues would be relatively easy for our AG to litigate.

There is NOTHING in Kalifornia law that says it is illegal to sell or buy magazine parts to rebuild grandfathered, legally owned standard capacity magazines. This practice has been going on for decades now and was never an issue when our current Governor was A.G., or any other state A.G. for that matter.

This lawsuit by the City Attorney for the Freak Show By The Sea is just grandstanding and a campaign of legal intimidation. The real purpose here is to shut down gun shows in the state altogether while providing despicable hacks like Dennis Herrera with lots of camera face time. I bet Dennis The Menace is planning on running for mayor soon. It also wouldn’t surprise me to find out that Mayor Bloomberg is providing funding and “legal expertise” for this nonsense.
