[1]California is supposed to be a liberal state, with the most liberal Democratic Party in the country.
Yet its top honchos back the bombing of Syria that is overwhelmingly opposed by Americans — left, right and center. Those honchos: House Leader Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco and Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer of Marin County.
I think it’s safe to say that both San Francisco and Marin County are even more opposed to the war than the rest of California — probably 50-to-1 against it.
The Huffington Post reported[2]:
Since President Barack Obama announced that he would seek Congress’ support for use of force[3] against Syria last week, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has been tasked with garnering crucial Democratic support for the attack.
But if recent comments from delegates representing the San Francisco Bay area[4] — Pelosi’s loyal base — are any indication, even staunch supporters may not be behind her on this one.
“I have tremendous respect for Nancy Pelosi as a leader, as a person, as an intellect,” Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-San Jose) told the San Francisco Chronicle[5]. “But I cannot ever delegate my decision to her.”…
“I remain opposed to any military involvement in Syria[6],” wrote Rep. Sam Farr (D-Carmel) in a statement. “I am concerned that immersing ourselves into another nation’s civil war would prove to be both a costly and timely endeavor; one that we can ill afford to make on the heels of two of the longest wars in our country’s history. Another prolonged war would leave us weak strategically while simultaneously increasing the suffering of the Syrian people.”
As criticism for the attack builds among delegates, the role of recruiting support could put Pelosi — who called the Iraq war a “grotesque mistake”[7]— in a tough spot.
That means it’s clear that Democrats themselves made three “grotesque mistakes” by re-electing Pelosi, Feinstein and Boxer. I’m not saying Democrats should nominate libertarians, although that would be nice. But they should at least vet more carefully state candidates to get those more in line with the positions of Democratic voters.
I suggest a 2014 primary campaign against Pelosi under the slogan, “Boot Bush Clone Pelosi!”
