Queeg – yes, rates will rise for some families that have somewhat high incomes, and presently get coverage through some kind of group scheme. For example, recently, Trader Joes was in the news about kicking part timers off the group plan. People were upset. But the only people really affected with higher rates were those with high household incomes. For example, according to one calculator, the maximum premium for a family of 4, 2 kids, with an income of $90,000 per year is $713, after a tax credit.

Is that similar to your situation?

Basically, the deal is, these families were getting a good deal in the old system, where a company’s full timers basically subsidized insurance for part-timers and their families. Now, they may not get that deal, and have to buy in the market.

The outreach effort will pay off. It will bring in both people who are in need as well as healthy people who are too used to going without. The latter will help pay for the former, and overall, having people on a regular HMO will be better than having them use the emergency room.
