As for Fletcher’s ‘evolution’ toward the left, it mirrors the political reality of California’s second largest city, which is now a stronghold of ‘progressive’/labor/environmental leftism. Pete Wilson’s midwestern/military San Diego is long gone, they have left the state, died or migrated to north county. What’s left is a somewhat seamless voting block of environmentalists, public employee unions and consumers of ‘benefits’. These are the people who actually bother to show up and vote, even if its raining. To the extent Fletcher thinks he might need some votes from the old-school types, he can always bang on his military service, much like John McCain. Ultimately the left-right dichotomy is a complete sham and we all know it. Like the Soviet Union, there really is only one party anymore and all the little issues that seem to differentiate D from R are just window dressing.
