We have a home care business and are struggling to figure out how we are going to keep our employees while cutting their hours from 60-70 hours per week to 40-45 hours a week. This will keep us from paying OT. The employees wages/hours will be cut in half.
On top of that, the ACA is going to take another blow at us. I was all for paying for medical insurance for employees. This would create a more desirable job for the employee and cut down on turnover. One I received a quote on the cost it totally blew me away. I don't know how we can stay in business if we have to deal with both of these issues.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

There is the employer model of an agency putting someone in the home who has been carefully screened and remains the agency's employee, receiving agency supervision and the employee receives social security credits and employee/employer taxes are paid. Then there is the contractor model where a person is placed in the home and paid through a 1099 form. This is an independent contractor and no supervision is allowed by State law. In our area there are large Filipino businesses that only place contractors. The employer model is effectively gone and with it agencies that tried to do things right. The contractor groups and privates now have a monopoly on live-ins and now I hear that the Filipino groups received Obamacare money to get this passed!?

I am so very sad that this bill will cause many "mom and pop" businesses (such as ours) to close our doors (been in business for 32 yrs). I feel so bad for the elderly people who have no idea what the future holds for them as far as remaining in their own home during their final days. It doesn't matter how much people have, the cost for a "live-in" will be WAY to high for anyone, but a very few, to afford it!

These {BLEEP} politicians don't give one rat's ass about the ability of the disabled or elderly persons requiring such care to pay for it. They just want to "feel" good about doing "something". These "limousine" types have no problem paying, but what about us, who can barely afford it now? No one coerced these people into these jobs, they took them freely. ....
