There are several historical responses to historical modernization: traditionalism, communism, fascism, socialism and counter-modernization (aka post-modernism). The failures and terrors of communism and fascism are well documented. The breakdown of religion and traditionalism are ongoing. Appealing to ethnic nativism is one counter-modernist strategy as a variation of traditionalism. Mahatma Ghandi was a traditionalist. Hitler embraced Nationalism; Lenin Socialism. Socialism represents itself as a combination of community and rational progress.

Jerry Brown is the figurehead for “post-modernism” that rejects rational industrialization and replaces it with a return to a bucolic and agrarian style of life while retaining modern technologies (windmills, electric cars, demolishing dams, and making the bourgeouise Capitalistic family non-normative). A totally modern society would be a science fiction nightmare out of a George Orwell novel. But a countermodern society also has its limits. Countermodernization typically evolves into demodernization (think energy blackouts, perpetual man-made droughts, attempts to force people back into using trains, electricity “brown-outs” from 4 pm to 7 pm in the Spring and Fall, cutting off of chemotherapy from cancer patients so they can die a natural death, etc.).

Jerry Brown, the mega-millionaire oil stock tycoon, often play-acts the role of a peasant, a priest who has taken a vow of poverty, or a Greek philosopher who has rejected worldly material pursuits. This play-acting is reminiscent of the shepherd dances performed by Marie Antoinette and her aristocratic entourage in the Gardens of Versailles.

Jerry Brown has never left the Youth Culture which was formative to his values and which is a by-product of countermodernization. In fact, he married back into the Youth Culture when he married his wife Ann Gust, the head of a youth clothing business catering to adults.

Countermodernization and its de-modernizing ideology has never taken root outside of California. That is why Brown’s prospects for President are probably not too promising.
