As a Maryland small business owner, these taxes are considered by us locals to be a contribution to Gov. O'Malley's presidential campaign. O'Malley was Hillary Clinton's campaign chair for MD in 2008. He learned from Obama's success that to make it as a Democrat on a national ticket, you had to appeal to rich liberal element of the party. He bought "green credibility" by committing the state to $3 billion dollars in extra electricity taxes to support offshore wind in MD. He has also imposed a tax on all non-permeable surfaces in the state to pay for rainwater run-off cleanup. Our governor's decision to fight the next war with the last war's strategy will come back to haunt him in future elections just as his policies will haunt the state for decades.
Honestly, in a state that surrounds Washington DC on three sides, there is very little a governor can do to really screw things up, particularly with spendthrift Feds so close. The proper solution is for businesses that have to complete beyond Maryland borders to find a more business friendly state to relocate to. I suspect that many California businesses will come to this conclusion when the full costs of AB32 are brought to bear.

The pity articles are relentless blaming everyone/anyone for every malaise in a very complex urbanized society.

At some point it's has to come back to individual choices about education, marriage, work ethic, compassion for others.

Make 2014 the year you stop bashing others and find ways daily to do little things to make living worthwhile.
