A billion here, a billion there for high-speed rail

highspeedrail-300x169A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you’re talking real money,” Sen Everett Dirksen, R-Ill., supposedly said, although the Dirksen Center says [1]there’s no record of it. The longtime Republican minority leader died in 1969.

But whoever said it, the saying comes to mind as California’s supposedly high-speed rail project now is projected to cost another $1 billion[2] for the key Fresno-to-Bakersfield segment. The new estimate boosts that price by 15 percent in just three years. Talk about inflation.

It’s a typical government program, costing way more than initially advertised.

And check out Chris Reed’s take on this development[3].
