“A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you’re talking real money,” Sen Everett Dirksen, R-Ill., supposedly said, although the Dirksen Center says there’s no record of it. The longtime Republican minority leader died in 1969.
But whoever said it, the saying comes to mind as California’s supposedly high-speed rail project now is projected to cost another $1 billion for the key Fresno-to-Bakersfield segment. The new estimate boosts that price by 15 percent in just three years. Talk about inflation.
It’s a typical government program, costing way more than initially advertised.
And check out Chris Reed’s take on this development.
