1) Current epic drought. May be linked to anthropogenic climate change, or it may not. Tree ring studies show an approximately 50 year drought in the 15 th century, which is tied to the collapse of puebloan native american communities in the southwest. Long term cause and effect in climate science is difficult to establish with complete certainty, and pronouncements by establishment figures become suspicious to me when money is involved, e.g. carbon taxes…

2) Over 100 years of aggressive fire suppression in the coastal sage scrub chaparral, which NEEDS to burn. The action of the natural fire cycle will not be stopped, only delayed, and the resulting buildup of highly combustible fuels is a recipe for disaster. One need look no farther than over the border in northern Baja state to see a more natural fire mosaic. In southern California, the introduction of small, explosively combustible non-native grasses, like Cheat grass has only med a bad situation worse.

3) The ‘vampire squid’ of crazy-quilt suburban development, with huge expensive houses built on windy ridge tops ‘for the views’-about the WORST place you can build a house smack in the middle of gigatons of explosive fuel. Then everybody is upset when the inevitable happens, and of course they ‘vow to rebuild’ and the authorities vow to double down on fire suppression.

IMHO we have a cultural problem: we don’t understand yet, at the genetic level, that we are not in France or England. We are in a north american arid landscape that has very different rules and we refuse to live by those rules.
