Any attack on property rights — which is what redevolpment really is — in the end impoverishes us all. If government can take a “blighted” property and give it to another private owner, such as Costco, then government can take anybody’s property for any reason. Because of redevelopment and the abuse of eminent domain (it’s supposed to be only for government buildings, roads, military bases, etc.), one area might look better; but what’s not seen is the overall diminishing of all property. The major result, in particular, is the massive restrictions on building new homes of any kind, hence the artificially sky-high property values that are driving out the middle class even more than record high taxes.
