Fifty years from now we may look back on transit systems as a complete waste of time; commuters to office jobs will be working from home. On the other hand, we may view rapid transit as the necessary conduit to providing jobs in commerce centers while dealing with energy conservation.
When residents in remote areas fight a transit right of way which may have the legitimate needs of the population at stake, are they selfishly forgetting how taxpayers enabled access to their property? For example, should the Antelope Valley Freeway (14) that enables residents in the Santa Clarita valley access to services be supported by taxpayers? Should the system of highway ramps that feeds into Acton, Sierra Highway, Pearblossum Highway, Wrightwood, Victorville, and Apple Valley be supported by taxpayers to enable remote businesses, ski resorts, and life styles?
Likewise, should the homeowners in Malibu have the right to deny taxpayers access to beaches in front of their homes? In the canyon where I live, we have to pay for our own roads and school buses.
Of course, select prudent, environmentally sensitive routes for right of way, but remember that transit systems are often the mode of transportation for taxpayers who need access to jobs and commerce. When Ms. Tucker, and others, pony up “monetary support,” they join the ranks of special interest groups who apparently believe that their slice of the pie was not baked in the same oven as the whole pie.

Thank you for your work on exposing this wasteful and damaging project. In the Acton community (just south west of Palmdale), we are facing the destruction of our town and rural lifestyle from several proposed routes of the HSR. Any help/ advice is appreciated. We have an active group in Acton / Agua Dulce called Acton and Agua Dulce High Speed Rail Coalition. I will send monetary support to Cal/Watchdog.
Sincerely,
Katherine Sky Tucker
