McChalium: I should have added “disgusted” to the list of non-voters: those so disgusted with the socialist system they can’t force themselves to participation in it.

As to breaking up the state, no matter how it’s done, I would support it. But Congress never would allow it.

A note to John Seiler: Calling people names such as “Lazy” or “Apathetic” is shameful behavior. If you want to motivate people to vote, give them something worthwhile to vote for. I, for example< would vote in approval to break California up into 2 or 3 states so that southern California voters don't have such a stranglehold on the politics of this state. Let them have their own state and solve their own problems without robbing the northern areas of their water.

There are probably as many reasons to not vote as there are people not voting. As “Bill Gore” above pointed out many see the whole process as a deception, where they are asked to legitimize whatever a politician may do by casting a vote of approval. By withholding their approval many folks at least have the satisfaction of saying “Don’t blame me I didn’t vote for that turkey.” And since all politicians are turkeys by definition… My apologies to real turkeys for denigrating them by comparing them to politicians.

If you know a better system anywhere in the world, you better go there, because if you don’t, this is the best you are ever going to get. As far as those who might want to “withhold their consent” by not voting–any excuse will do, I suppose. They can “withold” all they want, as long as they don’t believe they are still entitled to a voice.

Voter non-participation is ‘driven’ by apathy and dumb-down primarily, but maybe there’s something else going on, like the growing realization that our ‘democracy’ is really just the most wafer-thin veneer on a huge ugly fascist-corporate system of control. This system knows that it could easily be overthrown by the masses, were they to ever wake up from their television-induced narcotic state, so it legitimizes its many abuses of power via the pointless ritual of voting. Perhaps non-voters are simply witholding their consent.

If they don’t want to vote–don’t vote. Voting is a privilege–there should be no bribing people to vote! (In Australia, voting is a requirement.) I personally would rather that people who don’t give a darn or don’t care to learn the pros and cons about the issues they are voting on, would just refrain.
