Our country is soon-to-become a net exporter of oil and oil-based products. Did we see any of this coming…this fast? Whether we did or not, there is massive economic pressure on OPEC and oil-producing countries (e.g. Venezuela) to generate other sources of revenue as the price of a barrel drops below their economic breakeven point. For the moment, they’re holding on in hopes that the low price of oil drives U.S. companies out of the fracking business and barrel prices will return to past levels. I don’t think this will happen and California should get on board, ratchet up fracking and drive the final nail into the OPEC’s coffin.
