Gambling has been called “a tax on fools” and it is indisputable that certain California indian bands have gotten very rich by preying on this form of addiction, which is just as potent as addiction to drugs or alcohol. Then to add injury to insult, many of these native american communities, Pechanga being especially notorious, have given themselves over completely to greed by disenrolling a large percentage of their own community. Disenrollment in the world of the rez is the same as banishment. It is painful, evil and motivated entirely by love of money. It is also bad karma that wipes out much of the moral high ground that native americans occupy because of the numerous wrongs committed against them over the centuries. So for Pechanga to claim that it wants to ‘protect’ gamblers is absurd. The junkies can just as easily stay at home and lose money staring at their computer. These tribes really should have diversified away from gaming by now, instead of blowing it on toys…
