Identity Politics serves two purposes: first it unites voters around least common denominator aspects of a candidate’s presentation: gender, race, religion, sexuality, etc. While this is insulting to both the voters and the candidates, the voters fall for it every time. It also enables the state bureaucracy to continue its policies unchanged and unchallenged. Secondly, Identity Politics promotes the divide and conquer meme, which allows large populations to be very effectively controlled by small elites.
