The real problem here is that the state will not ban farmers open burning. This was supposed to happen in 1989 when many of these Biomass plants started operating. Unfortunately this did not happen and the farmers were suddenly sitting on a commodity that went for as much as 60 dollars a ton. The farm lobby has been too great to get open field burning banned. They have only been slightly restricted. The Biomass plants were not budgeted for the extra fuel costs so they had to find other sources of fuel in order to turn a profit. Ingrid Bostrum and her cohorts are an ignorant bunch that do not understand combustion and that the Biomass plants actually do help the air quality in California. The only way to keep these plants running is to get them affordable renewable fuel. It might also help if PG&E would renew their power contracts with them, but that's for another article.
