They say they need to spend top dollar to recruit and retain “the best”, but what do those best do? Can anyone point to some chancellor and say before he was hired the university wasn’t worth a damn but he came onboard and really turned things around? Can they point to anything these high rollers did that couldn’t have been done by someone else?

The silence in that regard seems deafening.
