Surfrider blesses the San Diego Pt. Loma waste water treatment plant's 40 year violation of the Clean Water Act, dumping >150 million gallons a day of untreated wastewater into the precious marine environment, then it does a 180 on desalination because brine discharge MIGHT affect said marine environment. Why the hypocrisy? Does Surfrider KNOW FOR A FACT that brine discharges will impact the environment, or is it just a feeling? Has Surfrider done any peer-reviewed research on this topic? NO-OF COURSE NOT. It's just run to the courts with an army of lawyers and make everyone dance to your tune. So twisted. So California....

Because of the coastal environmental consequences of the dense salty brine necessarily created with desalination plants, it seems obvious that there is a better way. Why not place these plants out in the deeper ocean, powered by sun and waves? The technology obviously is not the problem, just the lack of vision. Large stainless steel water tankers could transport the water. If oil rigs can be located in the open ocean, why not desalination plants?
