These are unusual times that call for alternative intervention methods.
Let’s say you know a neighborhood kid has been stealing neighborhood homes. You know if she is caught he will do worse after a slap on the wrist.
Time for AIM. What can you do to prevent this cretin from stealing or worse?

Reality Check:
Liberty is not possible if those who do not respect the God-given rights of others (murder, robbery, theft, fraud, criminal negligence, trespass, assault, etc.) are not held accountable. It is not “humane” to allow them to run loose in society. We have a responsibility to their victims and a responsibility to the greater good.
People who think it is mean to punish those convicted of serious crimes are enablers. There is a wonderful Twelve-Step program for Co-dependents that would help them adjust their self-destructive attitude. I recommend it.
