Why do I have the feeling that CalWatchdog is sympathetic to the college-swimmer rapist who has shown no evidence he is sorry for what he did?
I remember reading a newspaper article where someone was moaning about how the stigma of being found guilty of rape would follow this promising young man around for the rest of his life.
Well, yeah.
That is the point of criminal law. The stigma that comes from being found guilty of violating someone else's right to life, liberty, property, safety and/or pursuit of happiness has been thought to be a deterrent to crime for a number of years now.
If it doesn't, then the punishment is thought to vindicate the victim and instruct the guilty.
What really bothers me about rape cases is the way the laws are written. Justice cannot be served because the character of the accuser is open-season while the character of the accused is off-limits. This makes no sense.
We need some sort of balance here.
Meantime, I am really glad that even though this student-rapist got off with a slap on the wrist, the stigma of being a sex-offender will follow him around for the rest of his life.
Maybe it will be a warning to other promising young men.
And no, I am not a feminist and I don't hate men.
