The big problem (opportunity) with single payer is that it will force the government to be honest about costs. California has the lowest Medicaid reimbursement rates in the nation and the highest enrollment by absolute numbers or percentage. Even Medicare which is the Feds paying, only covers 85% of the costs. The shortfalls are made up from people with private health insurance which is why insurance premiums and deductibles went up for employer provided coverage when Medicaid eligibility doubled under Obamacare. The Medical providers are encouraged by the shenanigans to have high overhead costs and the safest play for insurers is to pay the rates deemed acceptable by the government (but without the discounts the government demands). So insurance gets charged by headcount with allowances made for age. By that logic, a 40 year old employee making $40K per year pays the same for insurance as an executive who makes $200K per year and 15-20% of that is to cover discounts give to patients with government insurance. So with healthcare costing $10k per capita, $2K is going to pay for bills outside you insurance pool and the bills are double the percapita costs of othe industrialized countries to begin with because of the shell game the government creates with payments.

We’ve arrived at this system through negotiations between special interest groups and the government. Will elimination of one interest group (insurers) lead to a more efficiency and a cost effective healthcare system or will those who provide care, make certain their needs take priority in the negotiations over consumers. I’d put my money on the people who have the most money to lobby.

It is all about taxes they collect, but not understanding what a mess and danger home less gave created. It is a shame though .
