It is ridiculous that we, the rate-payers, are looking to be financial raped over this. Considering that there is an essential monopoly which these companies have, perhaps it is time to "open the field" and allow for other companies to compete. Perhaps then, these companies won't be so complacent. It's just too bad that the rate payers of PG&E and SDG&E can't tell them, "YOU'RE FIRED!" and have another company provide their electricity. Sometimes, competition is a GOOD thing!

A possible solution to this issue of allowing zoning to locate houses close to transmission and distribution lines is to install the next generation of newer technology transmission line cables with a copper core but wrapped in composite ceramic material. This newer technology would result in minimal line sag during hot days or forest fires and the towers could also be built of composite material. This new cable would also increase transmission line capacity two times over conventional lines and are cheaper to install. China, South Africa, India and Indonesia are already having the buildout of their power line grids with this new cable. Here is link to one manufacturer - http://mercurycableinternational.com
