Good point Queeg--- I have a neighbor who runs a charter school--- she is a LOON. And, not bright. I know it's anecdotal but---- public education, while always needing reform, is a wonderful thing about our Republic----- the Doomera (tm) wants to destroy it---- Zzzzzzzzzzzz

Investing in people always brings bell curve results.....average/mixed, tending to mediocre.

Investing in thingees like bridges, roads, power, water, agriculture and medical devices bring productivity.

Matching people with thingees like homeless housing clouds end results.... will they ever be productive?

Now to preschool....if a proponderous amount of current students defy the bell curve and become less than average, will letting the same loons educate three year olds bring what?

If you look at school age children's performance on standardized tests, American kids do OK in the 4th grade but really fall behind by the 8th grade. This means that the middle school years and pre-middle school years is where things fall apart (and likely where home situations really start influencing outcomes). But there is no need to increase headcount much to fix the middle school issues but you'd need a 3-5% overall increase for all day Kindergarten and more for expanded pre-K. The solution that produces the most staffing is the one educators support.

With all of the money spent on academic research and all of the folks in graduate schools writing papers on arcane subjects, how can we not know whether there are lasting benefits of full day kindergarten? Or if that is even the right question? Maybe for non-English speakers. Maybe for children of single parent families. Maybe for kids with learning disabilities. Lack of rigor is disappointing.
